Wayne started learning to play the cornet in 1982. He joined Nelson City Brass in 1983 and steadily progressed through the cornet ranks to solo cornet.

After a short period of time in the NZ Army Band in 1987, he moved onto flugelhorn and during the next few years played and contested with Nelson, Marlborough Districts Brass and Motueka Municipal Band.

Wayne stopped playing in 1998 but rejoined Nelson City Brass in 2011 and after a year saw the light and changed from flugelhorn to baritone.

Wayne is the band's secretary and works for Aon Insurance Brokers as their Richmond Branch Manager.
