Night at the Opera: Saturday 24 August

Nelson Civic Choir and B Grade Champions Nelson City Brass present their first joint concert to bring you A Night At The Opera with a varied programme of popular opera choruses ranging from the tragic to the joyous.

The choir and band, with vocal soloists and instrumentalists, will perform under the baton of Nigel E. Weeks on Saturday August 24th at 7.30 pm in the Nelson School of Music Auditorium at NCMA.

The concert is based on different combinations of choir, soloists, and instrumentalists, with the choir performing the beautiful Easter Hymn from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, together with soprano soloist Rebecca Ryan, and the Chorus of Wedding Guests from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor with tenor soloist Ewen Griffiths. The choir joins with both vocal soloists to sing one of the most popular opera choruses, Brindisi, The Drinking Song, from Verdi’s La Traviata.

Nelson Civic Choir will perform the Anvil Chorus from Verdi’s Il Trovatore and the Triumphal Scene from Verdi’s Aida with Nelson City Brass, and will sing two Verdi choruses that have as their theme the plight of an oppressed country: the Chorus of Scottish Refugees, from Macbeth, and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco.

The concert also features arias performed by the soprano and tenor soloists, and items performed by Nelson City Brass, including the Grand March from Wagner’s Tannhäuser, the prelude to Verdi’s La Traviata, Song to the Moon from Dvořák’s Rusalka, and music from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

From the grandeur of Verdi to the pathos of Phantom of the Opera, this concert provides an opportunity to hear an array of much-loved opera choruses that have perennial appeal.
